Everybody makes them. Some people just make A LOT of them - autobiographical comics. I find is really interesting to see how artist's comics of their daily life and thoughts tend to differ from the rest of their work. I've compiled a short list of some that

Photographs from the last two weeks including mushrooms, a Murderface doppleganger in Buckaroo Banzai, animals, and a book that I bought in Princeton, WV. I picked it up because the dust jacket blurb sounded similar to a story description from "Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials" (His illustration of the Demu is on the right.) "Cage a Man" is the third book I've read after seeing Wayne Barlowe's illustration of a character or creature from it. I've been lead to the conclusion that Mr. Barlowe makes amazing art and reads terrible literature.

Dean Koontz Manga?

So I found this DEAN KOONTZ MANGA at my local library yesterday. I've never read a Dean Koontz novel but I have a vague idea of what genre he writes in and as far I know it had never been conducive to manga. I took it home and read it in about an hour.

I'm not sure why they thought this would make a good manga. The story seems like it would have fit a gritty American comic style a bit better and while I'm not familiar with Koontz's writing style I would think that whatever he brings to a story with his style is obliterated by turning it into a graphic format. (I mean I assume this, he could be a really dry boring writer for all I know.)

The characters seem like they would be interesting when they were described on paper but when drawn as Manga characters they're about as interesting as a bowl of bran flakes. I also do not understand how this person can draw faces so poorly. Again - I'm no great connoisseur of the manga but the faces are just badly draw in some places. Especially Odd. o_o His chin proportions change from scene to scene. The style of this illustrator (just going from this one book, she might have done some other really great stuff that I haven't seen) is SO BORING. The scenes are in a small town made up of generic buildings and houses that are mostly empty except for a two or three pieces of furniture. Annnd all those magazines.

So all and all I don't recommend this book unless you have an hour's time to waste in a Barnes & Noble that you've already read everything in.

Why current literature for children sucks

For those that know me, you're aware that I'm currently unemployed. I've been puttering around my Dad's storage shed (my Dad sells used books) and I came across a box. It could have been filled with another set of French encyclopedias - BUT NO. It was filled with something much better.

TURN OF THE CENTURY CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. Most of it is in rough shape but these are still amazing little bits of history. There are many qualities to these old books that I think we should bring back to current children's literature.

I was so frazzeled from the end of fall semester that I haven't done any real art, just sketches and prep work. Hopefully I'll start to work on some more finished pieces tomorrow. We took between all of us about three hundred photos at the Pow Wow (some of which shouldn't have been taken. Whoops. See here.) I may post some more photos later but I'm unsure if I need permission from the people I took them of. I'm not using them commercially but I'm pretty sure individuals have rights to their own image and I don't know if I can/should post them?

I haven't done any art since school let out (shame shame) because I went back to Bland for a week and was too busy with house projects to do work on any pieces. These photos include a picture of my house, shots of onions for the garden, a view from the interstate, a carpenter bee who became lost in my kitchen, and some black locust flowers I made into a drink that was pretty awesome in my opinion but all my family and friends hated.

This week I'm back at VCU and taking a book-binding class. It's pretty interesting so far yesterday we made accordion books. I don't know what we did today because I stayed home sick. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Washington Book Festival

Last weekend I got the opportunity to visit The National Book Festival in Washington D.C. I'd never been before so this was pretty exciting. :3 I went with friends (one of whom got their awesome dad to drive us there, much love to you your dad Abby!) so I had a really good time.

Probably the most exciting part of the festival was seeing Neil Gaiman speak (w00t). We were all excited. (Though none moreso than Abby.) We also bought a copy of his new book - "The Graveyard Book." We're splitting it between us because it was the last copy left. I was disappointed with the amount of books at the book festival. There weren't as many as I had imagined and the book tent was cramped. Now Neil was great but the most exciting celebrity that happened to be at the book festival was.....the TARGET DOG!

(PS: Watching the Vice Presidential Debate is killing me so here is a mildly amusing picture of tiny Batman getting bitch-slapped from some old comics my dad sent me.)

I haven't uploaded any new work because I don't have the software for my scanner and without it the closest scanner is the public library. And I am terribly lazy and don't want to drive all the way there to scan some crappy art.

So I'm uploading some photos I took today on a walk. The weather here has been a decent temperature but it keeps raining which means I can't do any woodworking. :/ There fore I went looking for stuff with interesting textures that I could take photos of. I also took a few photos just to show how nice Bland is in early spring. (I swear it's awesome, the photos aren't that great but my shitty camera and lack of photography skills are all I had to work with.)

CAR PAINTING EVENT

Okay, so I know that nobody is reading this blog yet but just to let you know on Friday the 18th of this month I'm getting some artists together and we're painting my shitty wagon!

Anybody who is loosely affiliated with VCU is welcome to come and paint on the car. Just remember that I have to drive it when I go back home. (So no painting on the glass AND NO PENISES! D:<) The event will be at one of the $3 Main Street Parking places, very close to Crossroads Cafe and Cuppa Tea Co. Bringing art supplies is a good idea seeing as I don't think I'll have enough for everyone.
